California Senator Kamala Harris announced that she is putting her hat in for the 2020 presidential election.
She has made history becoming the second Black woman to be elected to the Senate and she now has the chance to add on to her already impressive list of accomplishments. The announcement came rightfully during a "Good Morning America" interview about Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK day. The announcement also comes on the same week 47 years ago as when Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman to run in the Democratic Party for president.
"This is a moment in time where I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are,” Harris said. "Truth, justice, decency, equality, freedom, democracy: these aren’t just words, they’re the values we as American cherish. And they’re all on the line now."
She now enters a growing pool of people running for president including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Hedge Fund Manager Tom Steyer, Former housing and urban development secretary Julian Castro, Sen. Richard Ojeda, businessman Andrew Yang, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Bob Casey and former U.S. representative John Delaney. So far, no Republicans have announced a bid for the 2020 election.
The former California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney plans on holding her first campaign event in South Carolina on Friday and will swing back to her hometown Oakland on Sunday for another rally.
Harris is a progressive who believes in Medicare for all, low cash bail for inmates, increasing income for middle-class families and tax relief for low-income renters.
If successful, this will be another historic achievement for Harris and African-Americans overall. What do you think her chances are of winning?
