A petition launched on change.org called for Travis Scott, Maroon 5 and Big boi to take a knee during their Super Bowl Halftime performance.
Originally the petition that gained over 85,000 signatures was created to urge performers not to participate in the halftime show in support of Colin Kapernick. The former quarterback took a knee back in 2016 during the national anthem to bring attention to the issue of police brutality against African-Americans. He has been unsigned and hasn't played a game since 2016.
Once the creator of the campaign Vic Oyedeji realized the artists were going through with the performance, he changed the goal of the petition. "It appears these artists aren't backing out at this point," writes Oyedeji. "So now what? There's one way they can still redeem their reputation with their fans. Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi: take a knee during your set. Show the hundreds of millions of people watching that you stand in solidarity with Kaepernick and all players who protest police brutality. Use this opportunity to force the NFL to change their policy."
Major stars such as Rihanna, Jay Z, Amy Schumer, Adele, Cardi B and P!nk allegedly turned down offers from the NFL to perform.
Scott officially agreed to perform for the Super Bowl Halftime show along with Maroon 5 and Big Boi on one condition. The NFL had to agree to make a $500,000 donation to the Dream Corps, Van Jones' organization that deals with social justice.
"I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in,” Scott said in a statement. “I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change.”
So far there has been no response from any of the performers, so we may just have to wait and see what happens on Feb. 3 in Atlanta.
